Flash note: Risks of using discontinued software

Published on January 29, 2014

In its new flash note, the Agency explains the risks of using unmaintained software that arise not only from the lack of support by the software’s own manufacturer but also from the lack of support by third party software and hardware manufacturers (such as antimalware developers, computer peripherals manufacturers etc.)

The lack of support will lead in persistent exposure to vulnerabilities as systems will no longer benefit from security updates and patches. In addition, this may lead to a lack of possibility to update peripherals or third party applications because of incompatibility issues.

ENISA provides a set of recommendations for IT managers, manufactures and end-users in order to address the risks and ensure the security of their systems.
